United States vs Uruguay 11/09/19

11 September 2019

The United States and Uruguay go head-to-head at the Busch Stadium for an international friendly match that will see the home side try to overcome a period of a minor crisis.

The hosts go into this fixture off the back of a 3-0 loss to Mexico, which was their second consecutive failure against El Tri following the one in the Gold Cup final. Just one of the USMNT’s 13 outings since the turn of the year has ended in a stalemate (W8, D1, L4), with all three of their defeats in that span seeing them fail to find the back of the net. What’s more, just two of those 13 games have seen both teams score although six have featured over 2.5 total goals. Also, in the same sequence, Gregg Berhalter’s men have tackled three South American nations (W1, D1, L1), struggling to score over 1.5 match goals in each of those games.

Meanwhile, the visitors have bounced back after a heartbreaking Copa America penalty-shootout elimination to Peru, having pulled off a 2-1 win over Costa Rica last time out. It was the sixth time in eight matches since the turn of the year that Uruguay managed to score 2+ match goals and only the second one in which they’ve struggled to keep a blanks sheet. It will be their fourth-ever meeting with the USMNT, second in the 21st century, with La Celeste coming out on top in two of those H2Hs (W2, L1) although both came in the previous millennium.
