Newcastle Jets vs Wellington Phoenix 13/08/20
13 August 2020
Newcastle Jets and Wellington Phoenix go head-to-head at Jubilee Oval in what could be a high-scoring A-League affair. In fact, all four of their previous top-flight H2Hs have seen both sides hit the net, with three featuring over 2.5 goals.
The hosts have picked up three victories from their last four league matches (D1), all of which yielded precisely one first-half goal and a full-time margin of a single goal. By extension, 11 of Newcastle’s previous 12 A-League games have ended separating the sides by under 1.5 goals (W6, D4, L2), with seven seeing both teams on the scoresheet. In line with their combative spirit, none of Newcastle’s last eight top-flight home fixtures has produced a full-time margin greater than one goal (W4, D3, L1), with four of those five results (wins/losses) seeing the winner on the day concede at least once.
Meanwhile, the visitors head to Jubilee Oval on a run of three A-League clashes without a win (D2, L1), all of which yielded a goalless first half and under 2.5 goals at FT. Notably, none of Wellington’s last seven league trips has produced a stalemate (W3, L4), with five of those fixtures featuring over 2.5 goals and both sides scoring. The ‘Nix’ have scored the opening goal (if any) in six of their 12 top-flight trips this season but went on to win just three such contests (D1, L2). Curiously, Wellington’s away action usually sparks into life after the break, as 69.44% (25) of the 36 A-League road goals scored/conceded arrived in the second half of play.
