Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Tottenham Hotspur

The two sides that experienced contrasting fortunes on the opening Premier League weekend will meet at Molineux as Wolverhampton Wanderers take on Tottenham Hotspur.

The managerial shift at Molineux has failed to produce immediate impact as Bruno Lage, who replaced current Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo in the dugout, oversaw his side succumb to a 1-0 loss away to Leicester City on Gameweek 1. In addition to adding a fourth consecutive Premier League defeat to the tally, Wolverhampton again put their toothless attacking game on display at the King Power Stadium last time out, drawing a blank for the fourth time in seven league matches. Indeed, Wolves finished the 2020/21 Premier League campaign with a disappointing average of 0.94 goals per match to their name. The ‘Wanderers’ have not lost their first two games of a new league season since losing their opening two fixtures of their maiden Premier League season in 2003/04.

Meanwhile, Espirito Santo’s first Premier League match in charge of Tottenham produced a massive upset as he navigated his side to a hard-fought 1-0 home win over reigning champions Manchester City on Matchday 1. The Portuguese manager will be looking to keep things rolling as he returns to familiar surroundings. Another success is well within Tottenham’s reach, especially given that they’ve lost just one of their seven Premier League trips to Molineux overall (W4, D2). But Spurs’ win here is not a foregone conclusion by any stretch of the imagination, with Espirito Santo picking up just two victories from seven Premier League meetings with fellow Portuguese managers (W2, D3, L2). Yet, Espirito Santo’s defensive-minded philosophy should help to improve Tottenham’s run of four Premier League trips in which they conceded 2+ goals.
