Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Southampton

Wolverhampton Wanderers will be keen to post their first 2022/23 Premier League win when they entertain Southampton at Molineux Stadium this weekend.

It’s been a nightmarish start to the season for Wolverhampton as they head into proceedings as one of only three Premier League sides yet to pick up a single league triumph to date (D3, L2). Wolves’ faltering five-match winless league start has taken their dreadful run without a Premier League victory to 12 matches (D5, L7), the worst ongoing streak of all current top-flight teams. Southampton’s upcoming visit to Molineux could be a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, considering Bruno Lage’s lads have racked up four wins from their last five league H2Hs (D1), including the most recent three on the bounce. Moreover, Wolves haven’t lost any of their six previous home league meetings with Southampton (W3, D3), conceding more than one goal per game once in that span.

On the other hand, Southampton pulled off an eye-catching first-half comeback to beat Chelsea 2-1 in midweek Premier League action, making it two wins from three Premier League outings (L1). Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men registered a come-from-behind 2-1 victory at Leicester City on their most recent Premier League road trip and could win two away top-flight matches in a row for the first time since June 2020. Hasenhuttl will be desperate for his side to be disciplined at the back, knowing they have conceded four penalties against Wolves since the Wanderers’ top-flight return in 2018. High scoring has been a common theme in Southampton’s recent Premier League away games, with their last five league fixtures on hostile turf featuring over 2.5 goals and four seeing both teams score.
