Wolfsburg vs Freiburg

Volkswagen Arena forms the backdrop for a competitive-looking top-half Bundesliga clash between Wolfsburg and Freiburg.

Wolfsburg carried an impressive four-game winning streak into the World Cup halt and could break into the top six with another win against a Freiburg side they’ve lost to in their last two Bundesliga H2Hs. Volkswagen Arena has been a fortress this season, with ‘Die Wolfe’ losing just one of their seven Bundesliga home matches (W3, D3) but none of the last four (W3, D1). Niko Kovac’s men are firing on all cylinders, having netted 2+ goals in five consecutive home league outings. Inspired by an eye-catching average of 2.14 goals per top-flight home fixture, Wolfsburg will be looking to defy a topsy-turvy four-match Bundesliga form against Freiburg (W1, D1, L2).

As for Freiburg, a 4-1 home romping of Union Berlin on the stroke of the World Cup break solidified their bid to win the Bundesliga only seven years since earning promotion from the second tier. Too hot to handle early in the season (W9, D3, L3), Christian Streich’s team went into the mid-season hiatus only four points behind perennial champions Bayern Munich and will be looking to pick up where they left off in November. However, ‘Breisgau-Brasilianer’ have struggled to impress on the road, picking up just one win in their last five Bundesliga away matches (D2, L2). With three of those five games seeing them concede 2+ goals, it’s clear Streich must address Freiburg’s defensive woes.
