Wolfsburg vs Bayer Leverkusen 21/09/20
21 September 2020
Bayer Leverkusen head to the Volkswagen Arena to take on Wolfsburg in their Bundesliga curtain-raiser, looking to extend a winning run in their top-flight H2Hs to four.
The ‘Wolves’ have stumbled out of the blocks on the back of the restart in mid-June, conceding over 1.5 goals in all of their four Bundesliga home fixtures while drawing a blank twice in the process (D1, L3). That lack of firepower up front saw Wolfsburg finish the 2019/20 season as one of just four sides to fail to smash a 20-goal barrier at home (19 goals scored). Wolfsburg’s hopes of grabbing all three points here will heavily depend on whether they can find the opening goal. In fact, Oliver Glasner’s men failed to complete one single turnaround in nine Bundesliga home matches in which they conceded the opener back last season (D4, L5).
Despite undergoing a massive squad overhaul in the summer, Leverkusen dismantled lower-league outfit Norderstedt 7-0 in the DFB Pokal to start the new season with a bang. The visitors must be confident of carrying momentum into this fixture, especially considering all four of their previous top-flight trips to Wolfsburg have ended in their favor (W4). Each of those triumphs saw ‘Die Werkself’ score over 1.5 goals, which is something they’ve managed to do in just four of nine league trips this calendar year. Yet, Peter Bosz’s men were one of only four Bundesliga teams to rack up double digits in the context of away victories back in 2019/20 (10 wins from 19 league trips).
