Werder Bremen vs Wolfsburg 07/06/20

07 June 2020

Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg go head-to-head at the Weserstadion in a potentially exciting clash that promises action on both sides. In fact, ten of their last 12 top-flight H2Hs have seen both teams score, with eight of them producing over 2.5 goals, too.

The hosts have endured mixed fortunes since the Bundesliga (BL) returned to action (W2, D1, L2), as they trail 15th-placed Mainz by three points ahead of this round. While both of Werder’s wins in the post-pandemic period yielded the identical 1-0 scoreline, both of their defeats have come via a three-goal margin. But, arguably the weakest home side in Germany’s top-flight, ‘Die Werderaner’ have returned just 24% (six) of their total 25 league points at home, with their only home win of the season dating back to late September. Indeed, Florian Kohfeldt’s men have lost five of six BL games at the Weserstadion since the turn of the year (D1), drawing a blank in all but one of those fixtures.

Meanwhile, the visitors have won two of four league matches since the league restart, losing the other two, as they now find themselves in a must-win situation. Indeed, a 2-1 home loss to Eintracht Frankfurt last time out has allowed TSG Hoffenheim to close down the gap and get level on points with Wolfsburg in sixth. But, ‘Die Wölfe’ have won four of their five previous BL away fixtures (D1), with each of those games seeing over 2.5 goals and both sides on the scoresheet. Yet, it could be a daunting prospect for Wolfsburg to maintain their impressive away form, considering they’ve lost all four of their last top-flight trips to Werder.
