Watford vs Southampton 24/04/19
24 April 2019
Two unpredictable sides go head-to-head for the Premier League’s midweek fixture as Watford host Southampton to Vicarage Road.
In spite of a fractured campaign highlighted by a lot of ups and downs, the hosts are still running for the Europa League promotion, as they currently sit eight with the same point tally as seventh-placed Everton but holding one game in hand. However, the Hornets’ pursuit of the EL promotion is on the line as they endure a challenging period that has seen them lost three of five of their previous PL outings (W2, L3). Still, Javi Gracia’s men have suffered just one defeat in seven top-flight home outings in 2019 (W4, D2, L1). The goals have, however, been in short supply in Watford’s PL home fixtures after the Christmas break as three of their five home league clashes since the turn of the year featured under 1.5 goals.
Meanwhile, three wins in their last five PL games (W3, L2) sees the visitors moving a step closer towards preserving their top-flight status, as they currently sit five points clear of the relegation territory, with one game in hand over 18th-placed Cardiff City. Still, the Saint’s recent form displays can’t encourage Ralph Hasenhüttl considering his players have suffered three defeats on their previous four PL road trips (W1, L3) with all three of those failures saw them concede 2+ match goals. Also, three of Southampton’s four PL away wins have come against the league’s top-ten teams, with Hasenhüttl’s men scoring over 1.5 match goals three times too.
