Villarreal vs Mallorca 17/06/20

17 June 2020

Mallorca travel to the Estadio de la Ceramica to take on Villarreal, looking to snap a dismal eight-game winless run in their La Liga (LL) away H2H meetings (D2, L6).

The hosts pulled off a narrow 1-0 away triumph over Celta Vigo last weekend to bring a three-game losing league run to an end and keep their hopes of securing European qualification for the next season alive. Curiously, five of Villarreal’s last six league matches have ended separating the sides by under 1.5 goals, with 64.29% of the goals (scored/conceded) across those fixtures coming in the second half of play (9/14). In turn, Villarreal’s home action usually bursts into life after the break, as 76.74% (33) of their total 43 LL home goals this season came in the second 45 minutes.

In the meantime, the visitors succumbed to a 4-0 home defeat to Barcelona during the weekend as they enter this round trailing 17th-placed Celta Vigo by a point. It will be a daunting prospect for Los Bermellones to bounce back here, as they remain by far the league’s weakest away side (W1, D2, L10). Mallorca’s immense defensive problems on the road have seen them concede over 1.5 goals in 69.23% (nine) of their 13 LL away matches this term, allowing a total of 30 (league’s worst record). Probably the one thing Mallorca can draw inspiration from is that they’ve beaten Villarreal by at least a two-goal margin in both of their previous top-flight H2Hs.
