Tottenham Hotspur vs Bayern Munich 02/10/19
2 October 2019
For the first time since 1983/84 UEFA Cup, Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich will lock horns in European competition, as the two big guns go head-to-head at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the second match of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League (CL) Group B.
The hosts blew a two-goal lead against Olympiacos on the road in the CL curtain-raiser, allowing the Greek side to come back and secure a 2-2 draw. Last season’s CL runners-up won four of six home matches in the competition during the 2018/19 campaign, losing the remaining two. Four of those results (win/loss) have come by a single-goal margin, with three of Spurs’ triumphs seeing them beat their rivals to nil. Tottenham’s home H2H record against the German visitors can comfort Mauricio Pochettino (W8, D1, L2), especially as the London outfit won both of their previous such clashes.
On the other hand, the visitors brushed aside Crvena Zvezda with a 3-0 home triumph to kick off the new European season with a bang. The Bavarians boast a solid away record in Europe’s top-tier recently (W6, D3) having won two of three away games in the group stage last season. Furthermore, before being held to a goalless draw at Liverpool in the first leg of their round of 16 ties, the reigning Bundesliga champions have netted 2+ match goals in eight successive CL trips. Also, Niko Kovac’s men have enjoyed a notable defensive improvement, keeping a blank sheet in three of their last four CL trips before failing to do that 14 times in a row. But, it’s been a daunting prospect for Bayern to beat the Premier League sides on the road lately, picking up just one win in their last five trips to England (W1, D2, L2).
