Thailand vs Vietnam 05/09/19

5 September 2019

Thailand and Vietnam will kick off their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign this midweek, as the two nations go head-to-head at Thammasat Stadium for the opening match of Group G

A run of poor form has seen the hosts lose three straight games ahead of this one, conceding six goals while scoring none in the process. What’s more, the War Elephants have lost each of their last five home games, allowing over 1.5 match goals four times while failing to find the net on three occasions in that period. But, an encouragement for the home fans is that Thailand outplayed Vietnam in seven of their previous eight H2Hs on home soil (W7, L1). Five of Thailand’s wins in that period have seen them score 2+ match goals and concede precisely one, while the remaining three H2Hs ended with the identical 1-0 scoreline (W2, L1).

As for the visitors, they have won just two of their last seven games after 90 minutes (W2, D2, L3), with five of those matches producing under 2.5 goals. But, the Golden Dragons have suffered only one defeat in their previous ten road trips (W4, D5, L1), netting 2+ match goals in half (5) of those games. For Vietnam, most of the away action has taken part in the second half lately, as they’ve scored seven of their last nine away goals after the halftime break. A potential worry for the traveling side could, however, be the fact that they’ve struggled to preserve a blank slate in six of their last seven away matches, conceding over 1.5 match goals three times in the process.
