St Johnstone vs St Mirren 29/08/20
29 August 2020
St Johnstone will be looking to put an end to their four-game winless Premiership run against St Mirren (D3, L1) when the two teams collide at McDiarmid Park this weekend.
Except for a 2-1 away win over Kilmarnock, it’s been an utterly underwhelming start to the season for St Johnstone. They have, indeed, lost three of their remaining four Premiership fixtures (D1), failing to get on the scoresheet in each of those defeats. Particularly ponderous in the attack before the break, the ‘Saints’ enter this round as one of two Scottish sides yet to score in the first half. However, defensively robust, Callum Davidson’s men have restricted their opponents to a maximum of one goal per match in all four of their previous competitive home outings. In turn, they’ve kept a clean sheet in all four of their last top-flight H2Hs held at this stadium, winning three of them.
The visitors have, on the other hand, avoided defeat in three of their opening four Premiership fixtures (W2, D1), despite scoring under 1.5 goals in each. The ‘clean-sheet’ theme remains vital in the context of St Mirren’s recent competitive record. In fact, all six of their previous results (wins/losses) across various competitions have seen the winner on the day keep a blank sheet. Curiously, taking into account the final stretch of the 2019/20 season, none of St Mirren’s last five Premiership away games has ended in a draw (W2, L3), with four of them featuring over 2.5 goals.
