SPAL vs AC Milan 27/05/19

27 May 2019

SPAL and AC Milan go head-to-head at the Stadio Paolo Mazza for the final Serie A game of the season, as the visitors frantically chase all three points to boost their chances of reaching the Champions League qualification.

The outcome of this encounter won’t change much for mid-table hosts although they seem eager to snap a three-game losing streak against Milan in H2Hs. But, Gli Spallini go into this meeting off the back of two consecutive SA losses that have seen them concede five goals and score three in the process. A run of good home form can comfort their home fans though, as Leonardo Semplici’s men won three of their last five SA home games (W3, D1, L1). Interestingly, apart from a 1-1 draw with Genoa, all four of their remaining home matches in that period have been settled by a narrow one-goal margin, with three of them ending with the identical 2-1 scoreline (two in their favor and one against).

Desperate to return to the Champions League after five years of absence, the visitors have to wrap up all three points here and hope one of Inter Milan and Atalanta will make mistakes in the final round of Serie A fixtures. However, the Rossoneri have failed to impress away from home lately, securing just one triumph on their last five SA road trips (W1, D1, L3), with four of those games featuring under 2.5 goals. Still, five of Milan’s six SA away wins have arrived against teams from the bottom half of the table, which can encourage Gennaro Gattuso ahead of this clash. A potential worry for the Italian coach could, however, be the fact that his players have struggled to keep a clean sheet in seven of nine SA away fixtures in 2019, allowing over 1.5 match goals only once though.
