South Korea vs Uruguay 12/10/18

12 October 2018

South Korea are set to face-off against Uruguay in a friendly match that shall take place at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in Seoul.

After losing the opening two matches at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, the Taegeuk Warriors have executed one of the biggest surprises of the competition by defeating at the time defending champions Germany, thus sending them back home empty-handed. Although they’ve failed to go past the group stage, the Asian side returned home fully motivated, which was also evident in their 2-0 victory over Costa Rica in a friendly duel soon after the end of the final tournament. Paulo Bento’s team, meanwhile, played out a scoreless draw with the South American heavyweights Chile to prolong their loseless streak to three, as they hope to extend the positive run against another CONMEBOL-based outfit.

On the other hand, La Celeste have finished the World Cup Group A with a maximum of nine points and a +5 goal difference, having outscored Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Russia, without conceding a single goal. Led by the experienced expert Oscar Tabarez, Uruguay eliminated Portugal in the round of 16 before suffering a 2-0 quarter-finals elimination to France. The 2-time FIFA World Cup winners replicated the impressive form in a friendly meeting with Mexico last month, defeating El Tri by four goals to one.

Koo Ja-cheol, Park Joo-ho, and Suk Hyun-jun will make their national team comeback after skipping the September friendlies. As for the South Americans, the most notable absence will be the one of Barcelona forward Luis Suarez, who has suffered a knee injury.
