Sheffield United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers 09/07/20

09 July 2020

Sheffield United continue their chase of the Europa League qualification this midweek, as they welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers to Bramall Lane for only their second Premier League H2H in the 21st century (D1).

The hosts are having a hard time, having won just one of their last five Premier League outings (D2, L2), as they trail sixth-placed Wolves by four points. A genuine lack of firepower in the final third saw Sheffield draw a blank in three of those five matches, as the Blades remain one of two sides from the upper half of the table yet to reach 40 goals. Still, the majority (58.82%) of their 34 Premier League goals scored this season came on home turf (20), despite United scoring over 1.5 goals in just five of 16 top-flight home games (31.25%). However, Sheffield have based their home success on an almost impenetrable defense that has shipped a league third-low 14 Premier League home goals on an average of 0.87 goals conceded per home match.

Meanwhile, Wolves’ three-game winning run in the Premier League was brought to a halt with a 2-0 home defeat to Arsenal last time out. Yet, the Wanderers’ rock-solid defense has kept a clean sheet in seven of their nine previous league fixtures, with three of four goals they conceded across those games coming before the break. In turn, 76.47% (13) of Wolves’ 17 Premier League away goals conceded this season arrived in the first half. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men rescued more away points than any other English side though (15), losing just three of ten league games on the road in which they’ve shipped the opener (W3, D4).
