RB Leipzig vs Freiburg 14/03/20

14 March 2020

Fresh from the Champions League success against Tottenham Hotspur, RB Leipzig will look to carry that momentum to the Bundesliga (BL) when they take on Freiburg at the Red Bull Arena this weekend.

Although unbeaten in six consecutive league fixtures ahead of the kick-off (W3, D3), the hots have played out back-to-back BL draws going into this match, with both of them featuring under 2.5 goals. But, at home, ‘Die Roten Bullen’ have not lost a single of their last 12 outings in all competitions (W8, D4), with seven of those victories yielding a margin of at least two goals. Yet, poor defensive performances in the first half could be a reason to be wary of, considering that 69% (nine) of Leipzig’s 13 BL home goals conceded came before halftime. That’s probably why Julian Nagelsmann’s men have shipped the opening goal in 50% of their 12 BL home fixtures but lost just one of them (W2, D3).

As for the visitors, they managed to halt a three-game winless BL run (D1, L2) with a 3-1 home triumph over Union Berlin last time out that has boosted their hopes of landing a top-six finish. Even though they sit only one point below sixth-placed Schalke, Freiburg face a daunting prospect of cutting down that gap here, as they take on a side they’ve lost to in all three of their previous top-flight away H2Hs. What’s more, Christian Streich’s players have won only once in their last ten BL trips (D4, L5), drawing a blank in four of those five failures. The joint-slowest league away starters, Freiburg have conceded the opener in ten of 13 BL road fixtures, although they avoided defeat on half of those occasions (W2, D3, L5).
