Motherwell vs Dundee United 08/08/20

08 August 2020

Motherwell welcome newly-promoted Dundee United to Fir Park, looking to kick-start their 2020/21 Scottish Premiership campaign.

The hosts have started the new league season with a whimper rather than a bang, succumbing to a narrow 1-0 away loss to Ross County. That means Motherwell have picked up just one win from their last nine Premiership fixtures (D3, L5), the 2019/20 campaign included. A genuine lack of firepower up front saw the ‘Steelmen’ draw a blank in five of those nine matches and find the net precisely once per game in three of the other four. Taking no prisoners at home, only one of Motherwell’s 15 Premiership home encounters last season has ended in a draw (W7, L7), with eight of those 14 results (wins/losses) yielding a full-time margin of at least two goals.

Meanwhile, Dundee United’s first Premiership match since their top-flight return ended in a 1-1 draw with St. Johnstone, which puts them on a four-game winless run across various competitions (D3, L1), last season included. The visitors have largely failed to impress in the attacking aspects this calendar year, netting under 1.5 goals in eight of 12 competitive outings since the turn of 2020. More importantly, they are winless in four consecutive road trips in all competitions (D2, L2), drawing a blank in the last three. Although this will be their first top-flight meeting since 2016, the ‘Terrors’ can draw inspiration from the fact they’ve won five of their last seven Premiership H2Hs held at this venue (L2).
