Mexico vs Uruguay 08/09/18
08 September 2018
Mexico and Uruguay are going to face off against each other at the NRG Stadium in Houston, with the South America team preparing to start a life without Óscar Tabárez.
The curse known as “La Famosa Quinta Partida” has been hunting El Tri since 1994, and even this year, the most successful CONCACAF side failed to advance to the quarter-finals after suffering a 2-0 loss to Brazil in the round of 16. Mexico started the World Cup on the right foot, securing a stunning 1-0 win over Germany, after which they clinched a comfortable 2-1 triumph over South Korea that shipped them to the knockout stage for the sixth consecutive time. However, the Mexican football is not having the best of times, especially after the former national team manager Miguel Herrera revealed some dangerous accusations stating that the federation draws up the squad rather than Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti, who has been appointed as an interim coach after the World Cup.
Meanwhile, La Celeste, who exited the most notable FIFA tournament in the quarter-finals following a 2-0 loss to France, saw Tabárez leaving the bench of the national team after twelve years, with Fabián Coito taking his place as a temporary solution. Before suffering elimination, the CONMEBOL side achieved four victories, finishing top of Group A without conceding a single goal, after which they defeated Portugal in the round of 16 by two goals to one.
Carlos Salcedo, Rodolfo Pizarro, Andres Guardado, Javier Hernandez, and Hector Herrera are all ruled out from the Mexican squad for the United States tour. As for Uruguay, Barcelona forward Luis Suarez will spearhead the attack, but without his favored partner Edinson Cavani, who will remain on the sidelines after only recently returning to full fitness.
