Mexico vs Algeria 14/10/20

14 October 2020

Fresh from a narrow 1-0 win over the Netherlands, Mexico will be looking to extend their winning run to eight games when they face Algeria at the Cars Jeans Stadion.

Gerardo Martino’s men have hit a purple patch of form ever since succumbing to a dismal 4-0 loss to Argentina back in October 2019, putting together seven straight wins, five of which yielded a full-time margin of over 1.5 goals. During that seven-game sequence, ‘El Tri’ have netted the opening goal six times, scoring 2+ first-half goals on three occasions. Additionally, the North American’s giants boast an impressive overall record against the African opposition (W17, D7, L2). Yet, Mexico’s main strength over the past 15 months has been a rock-solid defense that has kept a clean sheet in seven of 11 outings across that period, conceding precisely once per game in three of the other four.

As for Algeria, a 1-0 win over Nigeria last time out did extend their winning run to three, and it also means that all seven of their previous results (wins/losses) have seen the winner on the day keep a clean sheet (W6, L1). Curiously, though, the ‘Fennecs’ have picked up six triumphs from their last nine outings (W6, D2, L1), four of which came via the identical 1-0 scoreline. In fact, going back to June 2019, Djamel Belmadi’s men have been virtually impenetrable, preserving a blank sheet in 11 of 15 fixtures, conceding precisely once per game in three of the other four.
