A consolation 1-0 away win over Manchester City in their Carabao Cup semi-finals replay may bolster Manchester United’s hopes of overcoming a two-game losing Premier League (PL) streak when they take on Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford this weekend.

The hosts have suffered another dip in form lately, losing three of their last four PL fixtures (W1) as they now trail fourth-placed Chelsea by six points. Frustratingly for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, all of those defeats have come via the same 2-0 score, even though United produced 15 shots on target across those games. The fact that three of their six top-flight wins at Old Trafford this term came against the current top-seven teams could serve as a morale boost in United’s attempts to break into the top four. What’s more, they’ve outplayed Wolves in four consecutive PL home H2Hs before playing out a 1-1 draw last season.

Meanwhile, only one of Wolves’ last eight PL games ended in a stalemate (W3, L4), with each of those results (win/loss) seeing the winner prevail by a single-goal margin. In turn, just one of their seven PL away results has witnessed the winning side register a victory via a two-goal margin (W4, L3). Arguably the slowest starters in England’s top tier, the Wanderers have shipped the opener in nine of 12 PL road trips so far, but they’ve still managed to return 12 points from such fixtures (W3, D3, L3). Hence, it’s not strange that 71% of their 17 PL away goals scored arrived in the second half.
