Manchester United vs West Ham United 14/04/19

14 April 2019

After a narrow 1-0 home loss to Barcelona in the Champions League, Manchester United return to the Premier League action as they welcome West Ham United to Old Trafford.

Two defeats in their last three PL outings (W1, L2) currently put the hosts three points adrift of the Champions League promotion zone with six games left to go. Although the Red Devils are enduring the most challenging period since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s appointment – four losses in their last five matches across all competitions, they have yet to suffer a league defeat at home since the Norwegian’s arrival (W5, D2). In that period, the 3-time CL winners have scored 2+ match goals on seven occasions while restricting their rivals to a maximum of one goal per match six times. Another encouraging fact for the home fans is that Manchester United’s last home loss to West Ham dates back to 2007, with the Red Devils pulling off ten wins in 13 of their previous H2Hs at this venue.

On the other hand, in spite of a fractured campaign, the visitors are still running for the last Europa League promotion spot, as they reside five points below seventh-placed Leicester. West Ham’s inability to maintain a consistency that has seen them winning and losing in sequences is the main reason they sit 11th. The Irons have endured mixed fortunes in the previous seven league fixtures (W3, L4), as they come into this meeting looking to bounce back after back-to-back PL defeats. Interestingly, all four of the Hammers’ last league failures have seen them struggled to find the back of the net, with three of those games ending with the identical 2-0 scoreline against their favor.
