Manchester City vs Wolverhampton Wanderers 06/10/19

6 October 2019

Fresh from a comfortable 2-0 home triumph over Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League, Manchester City will be trying to reduce the gap on the Premier League (PL) toppers, Liverpool, when they face-ff Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad Stadium this weekend.

The hosts sit five points adrift of the Reds ahead of this round, but a run of impressive form saw them win five consecutive matches in all competitions by an intimidating +18 goal difference (GF:19, GA:1). Pep Guardiola’s boys have been outstanding in the final third this term, racking up 27 PL goals already. They are the only team in England’s top-tier competition to score 2+ match goals in all seven league games, finding the net in all but one half of the PL action played thus far. Big favorites to win here, the Citizens have secured four triumphs in five top-flight H2Hs with Wolves at home since the turn of the new millennium (W4, D1), bagging at least three goals on four occasions across that period.

Meanwhile, a 2-0 defeat of Watford was the visitors’ first PL triumph this season after six straight failures to get all three points (D4, L2). It was also the first time since the goalless away draw with Leicester City on the opening matchday that the Wanderers’ shaky backline managed a clean sheet. A poor away form lasting from late February indicates that Wolves will hardly halt a five-game winless run in the PL H2Hs (D1, L4). Nuno Espirito Santo’s men find themselves in an awkward position ahead of this trip, having pulled off only one victory in the last ten PL trips (W1, D4, L5). Also, they’ve drawn a blank twice in the four previous PL away matches, scoring more than one goal just once in that sequence.
