Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur 20/04/19

20 April 2019

Devastated by midweek’s Champions League elimination to Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City welcome the same rivals to Etihad Stadium looking to get their revenge.

Although the Citizens pulled off a 4-3 home win back on Wednesday, it wasn’t enough for them to advance to the CL semi-finals, which is why Pep Guardiola’s men can now fully focus on their Premier League commitments. Sitting two points adrift of the PL toppers Liverpool with one game in hand, the reigning holders have everything in their hands. Not only the Citizens boast an almost perfect home record (W16, L1), but they have also netted more goals at home than any other PL side (55), scoring 2+ match goals in 16 of 17 PL home outings. What’s more, Guardiola’s players have racked up a 13-game home winning run across all competitions in the build-up to this meeting, keeping a clean sheet nine times in the process.

Meanwhile, although the visitors have a one-point lead over fifth-placed Chelsea with one game in hand, they still have a long way to go before securing a top-four finish. Interestingly, the Spurs are the only PL team that has yet to play out a draw away from home this campaign (W11, L6), but they go into this meeting off the back of four straight PL away defeats. Notably though, three of those failures have ended with the same 2-1 scoreline against their favor. Not only Tottenham’s last PL road win dates back to January, but Maurizio Pochettino’s men chase their elusive first away win over PL’s top-five teams this campaign (L3). Although all five of Tottenham’s previous competitive triumphs saw them beating their rivals to nil, it’s hard to see them outplaying City with a clean sheet.
