Manchester City vs Liverpool

Saturday’s Premier League action gets underway with a mouth-watering top-table six-pointer between Manchester City and Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium.

Despite winning a historic treble last season, Pep Guardiola’s high-flyers are not showing signs of slowing down, with a four-game unbeaten streak (W3, D1) firing them to the top of the Premier League table. But their lead at the table’s summit is fragile as only one point separates them from their closest followers, Liverpool and Arsenal. Beating the ‘Reds’ might help put some daylight at the top, especially considering it would be a historic milestone in England’s top-flight football. Coming into proceedings, the ‘Citizens’ have won 23 consecutive home matches in all competitions and could become the first side in England’s elite division to do it 24 times in a row since Sunderland in 1892. But there’s no room for complacency, as Man City played out a 4-4 draw against Chelsea before the international break.

On the other hand, Liverpool thumped Brentford 3-0 at home last time out to bounce back from a dreadful 1-1 draw at newcomers Luton Town on their most recent Premier League travel. Despite only losing once in 12 league matches this season (W8, D3), Jurgen Klopp’s men have fared much better at Anfield, with only six of their eight top-flight triumphs coming on hostile turf (D3, L1). To put their travel sickness in context, just 33% of Liverpool’s Premier League points have arrived away from home (9/27), highlighting the significance of improving their performance outside Anfield. But with Klopp going winless on his last seven Premier League visits to Man City (D3, L4), it’ll be an uphill task.
