Mallorca vs Valencia 19/01/20

19 January 2020

Mallorca and Valencia will face off at the Estadio de Son Moix this weekend, with the traveling side looking to extend their winning run in La Liga (LL) H2Hs to three games.

A haul of one point from their last six top-flight outings has seen Mallorca slip to the relegation zone, although they are level on points with 17th-placed Celta. While four of those matches during that six-game sequence produced over 2.5 goals and saw both teams score, three of Mallorca’s five defeats in that span have come via a single-goal margin. ‘Los Bermellones’ can draw inspiration from their home results this season, especially considering that 66% of their league points have come at this venue (ten of 15). But, the hosts have suffered a dip in form that has also influenced their home displays. Indeed, they’ve gone from four consecutive LL home fixtures without a loss (W3, D1) to back-to-back defeats. Both of those failures have seen them concede the opener inside the first 20 minutes and draw a blank in the first half.

The visitors have started the new calendar year with a 1-0 home win over Eibar before succumbing 3-1 to Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup. In fact, a defeat in Jeddah has halted Valencia’s seven-game unbeaten run in all competitions (W4, D3), and it has been the fifth consecutive match where the Oranges scored precisely one goal. Also, Los Ches have not been particularly convincing on the road this season, with just 35% of their total LL points coming away from home (11 of 31). Things are not looking good for Valencia here either, although it will be their first trip to the Estadio de Son Moix since 2012. They seem not to be enjoying traveling to the Balearic Islands very much, at least based on their previous five top-flight journeys to Mallorca (W1, D1, L3).
