Mainz vs Bayern Munich

Bundesliga record-breakers Bayern Munich take a trip to Mewa Arena to take on mid-table Mainz side after mathematically winning their 32nd top-flight title.

An embarrassing 5-0 defeat away to Wolfsburg last time out left Mainz five Bundesliga fixtures without a victory (D2, L3), condemning them to another underwhelming mid-table finish. But a return to their beloved Mewa Arena could inspire a comeback, with Bo Svensson’s men racking up six triumphs in their last eight Bundesliga home matches (D1, L1), four of which came by 2+ goals ‘to nil.’ Worryingly, though, ‘Die Nullfünfer’ have suffered defeats in two of their last three Bundesliga meetings with Bayern (W1) despite breaking the deadlock on each occasion. Yet, even if they concede first, Mainz should have enough character to bounce back, having lost just one of their three home league matches in which they shipped the opening goal this season (W1, D1).

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich swept bitter rivals Borussia Dortmund aside with a convincing 3-1 home triumph last time out to wrap up a record-breaking tenth consecutive Bundesliga crown. With no pressure on their shoulders anymore, the ‘Bavarians’ will be looking to build on their eye-catching five-game winning league streak and avenge a 2-1 defeat in this exact fixture last season. Julian Nagelsmann’s men have been scoring at will this season, netting a staggering 92 goals after 31 Bundesliga matchdays, their joint-best scoring tally at this stage of a top-flight season. Indeed, the perennial German champions have bagged 46 goals on the road this Bundesliga campaign, at least nine more than any other side. Given their intimidating firepower up top, it comes as no surprise that Bayern have fought back to avoid defeat in three out of four Bundesliga away games in which they conceded first this term (W1, D2).
