Mainz 05 vs RB Leipzig 24/05/20

24 May 2020

Mainz 05 and RB Leipzig go head-to-head at the Opel Arena this weekend, as the traveling side look to stretch their unbeaten run in the Bundesliga (BL) H2Hs to four straight games (W2, D1).

Unbeaten in three successive league matches (W1, D2), the hosts have created a four-point lead on relegation-threatened Fortuna Dusseldorf, as they take on a side they’ve not lost to in both of their previous BL home H2H clashes (W1, D1). But, a dismal home form over their last seven league games held at this venue (W1, D2, L4) suggests Mainz will face an uphill task of maintaining their home streak against Leipzig. Another possible worry for the ‘Karnevalsverein’ is their slow start to home matches since they’ve shipped the opening goal in eight of 13 BL home games so far, losing six such matches (W2).

Meanwhile, a frustrating 1-1 home draw with Freiburg last time out has thrown a spanner in the works on Leipzig’s hopes of winning the title, as they now trail league leaders Bayern Munich by seven points. Additionally, a possible failure here could see them drop further down the table, with fifth-placed Bayer Leverkusen sitting just one point adrift ahead of this round. Away from home, ‘Die Roten Bullen’ have picked up only one win in their last five league fixtures (D3, L1), although they’ve managed to shut out their rivals in the last three. However, Julian Nagelsmann has to be worried about the fact that his players have failed to find the net in three of their four previous BL travels.
