Mainz 05 vs Eintracht Frankfurt 03/12/19
3 December 2019
The weekend’s Bundesliga (BL) action concludes at the Opel Arena, as Mainz 05 and Eintracht Frankfurt go head-to-head in the bottom-half-of-the-table clash.
With a record of four wins and eight defeats, the hosts are the only team in Germany’s top-tier that is yet to play out a draw this term. Sitting only one point clear of relegation-threatened Hertha BSC, ‘Die Nullfünfer’ will try to post back-to-back BL triumphs for the first time this term. A stunning 5-1 away win over TSG Hoffenheim last time out halted their two-game losing BL streak, and that haul equaled their tally from the previous four league matches. Still, only dead-last Paderborn have shipped more BL goals than Mainz (31) so far, although just 29% of those goals have come on home turf (9). Also, three of Mainz’s five home results (win/loss) have been settled by the narrow one-goal margin (W1, L2), with four of those matches producing over 2.5 goals and seeing both teams score.
Meanwhile, the visitors defeated Arsenal 2-1 in the Europa League a few days ago and will be looking to carry that momentum into the national championship. Losers in their last two BL outings, they now trail fourth-placed Bayern Munich by seven points, and another failure could end their hopes of securing the top-four finish. The second-worst traveling side so far, Die Adler have registered only one triumph in five BL trips, losing the remaining four. Interestingly, four of those results (win/loss) have come via a single-goal margin, with three of them ending with the identical 2-1 scoreline. Another potential worry for Adi Hütter is his side’s dismal top-flight record at the Opel Arena in the 21st century (D6, L5).
