Mainz 05 vs Borussia Monchengladbach 24/08/19

24 August 2019

Mainz 05 and Borussia Monchengladbach go head-to-head at the Opel Arena with both sides looking to post their first win in the 2019/20 Bundesliga (BL) season.

The hosts are desperate to bounce back after a disastrous 3-0 away loss to Freiburg in the opening day, but beating Monchengladbach seems like a daunting prospect for Die Nullfünfer. They have not only suffered three defeats in their previous five H2Hs with Monchengladbach (D2, L3), but Karnevalsverein have also struggled to find the net the last three times these two have faced each other. Still, Mainz have racked up a four-game unbeaten BL home run in the final stage of the 2018/19 campaign (W3, D1), bagging three or more goals across all of those matches. Notably, just one of Mainz’s eight BL home outings in 2019 has featured under 2.5 goals, with of the remaining seven games producing four or more goals.

Meanwhile, the visitors have been held to a goalless home draw by Schalke 04 last time out, which was the second consecutive BL game where they’ve struggled to find the net. The Foals have won only one of their last six BL fixtures (W1, D2, L3), with half of those games (3) producing over 2.5 goals. Also, none of Monchengladbach’s last five BL away games have ended in a stalemate (W3, L2), with three of those matches ending with the same 1-0 scoreline (W2, L1). The Prussians boast an encouraging recent away BL H2H record against Mainz (W2, D1), especially as they’ve conceded just one goal across those meetings, scoring three themselves though.
