Lokomotiv Moscow vs Atletico Madrid 02/10/19

2 October 2019

Atletico Madrid travel to the RZD Arena to take on leaders of Group D Lokomotiv Moscow, hoping to post their first win in the ongoing UEFA Champions League (CL) season.

Although the hosts kicked off the 2019/20 CL campaign with an impressive 2-1 away win over Bayern Leverkusen, a disappointing recent H2H record against La Liga sides certainly worries the home fans. A 2-1 home win over Athletic Bilbao in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League aside, the Russian giants have failed to pick up a win in all but one of their last 12 European clashes with Spanish opponents (W1, D2, L9). Also, a win over Leverkusen has seen Lokomotiv match their last season tally of three points in the CL group stage (W1, L5). Disappointingly for the home side, all of those defeats have witnessed Loko score one goal or less, with three of them seeing them concede 3+ match goals.

Meanwhile, the visitors performed a stunning late comeback against Juventus to secure a 2-2 home draw on matchday one and are now looking to stretch their unbeaten run against the Russian clubs to seven games (W4, D2). In addition to winning three of four trips to Moscow, Los Rojiblancos have proved to be a tough nut to crack when away from home, losing just three of their previous 11 European away fixtures (W3, D5, L3). But, Los Rojiblancos failed to impress on the road in the 2018/19 CL campaign, pulling off just one triumph in four trips (W1, D1, L2), shipping eight goals while drawing a blank on three occasions in the process.
