Liverpool vs Leicester City
Championship pacesetters Leicester City head to Anfield to meet familiar foes Liverpool in an exciting League Cup fixture.
After back-to-back comeback wins over LASK Linz and Wolverhampton in the Europa League and Premier League, respectively, Liverpool finally scored first in a comprehensive 3-1 home win over West Ham at the weekend, extending their stellar winning streak in all competitions in six games. Jurgen Klopp’s men are firing on all cylinders this term, netting multiple goals in six straight matches since a 1-1 draw at Chelsea on the opening Premier League weekend. Another free-scoring display is well on the cards, with the ‘Reds’ netting at least twice across their last five home meetings with Leicester in all competitions (W5), including a penalty shoot-out League Cup win in December 2021 (3-3). Incidentally, they’ve scored precisely three goals in all three outings at Anfield this term (W3).
As for visiting Leicester City, a hard-fought 1-0 home win over Bristol City at the weekend solidified their bid to secure a swift Premier League return following last season’s fateful Premier League campaign. After suffering relegation to the Championship, the ‘Foxes’ have gone from strength to strength, clocking up seven wins in eight second-tier games (L1) to assume control of the top spot in the division. Unlike Liverpool, Enzo Maresca’s men have already competed in the League Cup this term, overcoming lower-league Burton and Tranmere Rovers via an identical 2-0 scoreline in the previous two rounds to set up this tie. Both wins came away from home and form part of Leicester’s phenomenal six-game winning run outside the King Power Stadium this season. It’s worth noting that five of those victories came ‘to nil.’
