Liverpool vs Arsenal

Anfield sets the stage for a top-table Premier League six-pointer between arch-rivals Liverpool and Arsenal.

Despite attempting an eye-watering 35 shots on goal, Liverpool surrendered an outstanding 26-game scoring run in the Premier League last weekend with a gut-wrenching 0-0 draw against Manchester United. However, Jurgen Klopp’s men have quickly repaid the Anfield crowd for that upset, putting West Ham to the sword in midweek League Cup action courtesy of a 5-1 demolition. Anfield has been one of the most intimidating venues in the Premier League over the years, with the ‘Reds’ going unbeaten in 49 of their last 50 home league matches (W38, D11). Moreover, they had won all 11 previous home games this season, notably netting 3+ goals on nine occasions. Since they’re unbeaten in top-flight H2Hs against Arsenal at home for over a decade, Liverpool will be confident of recovering their place at the summit by Christmas.

Although Anfield hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for Arsenal in the past 11 years, they held Liverpool to a 2-2 draw in this corresponding fixture last term before emerging 3-2 victors at the Emirates. After going unbeaten in both seasonal encounters against the ‘Reds’ for the first time since 2014/15, the ‘Gunners’ won’t shy away from the challenge as they bid to top the Premier League standings at Christmas two seasons in a row. Posting their first top-flight triumph at Anfield since 2012 would mark Arsenal’s 25th Premier League of 2023. Since they achieved this feat in 2022, it would be the first time in the club’s illustrious history that they’ve hit that landmark in two successive calendar years. But to do that, Mikel Arteta’s side must end a two-match winless run on the road (D1, L1).
