Lille vs Paris Saint-Germain 27/01/20

27 January 2020

Fresh from a 3-0 success against Reims in the Coupe de la Ligue, Paris Saint-Germain travel to the Stade Pierre-Mauroy to take on Lille.

The hosts have suffered a dip in form recently, going from four straight Ligue 1 (L1) victories to back-to-back defeats, with four of those results (win-loss) during that six-game sequence coming via the identical 1-0 score. However, Les Dogues remain the only side in France’s top-tier competition that have yet to taste defeat on home turf this season (W8, D2). Impressively, Christophe Galtier’s men have opened the scoring in nine of ten L1 home fixtures, with the lone exception of a goalless draw with Metz. Still, the majority of their home wins were hard-fought, with 62% of their L1 triumphs at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy coming via a single-goal margin. Lille will now be putting their hopes of maintaining the unbeaten home run to the test against the side they’ve lost to five times in their previous seven top-flight H2Hs held at this venue (W1, D1).

Meanwhile, the visitors scored over 1.5 goals in four successive L1 road trips and won each of those clashes, with three of their last such triumphs coming via multiple-goal margins. The Parisians are maybe the only team in the league able to respond to Lille’s strong home starts, as they scored the opener in nine of ten L1 away fixtures themselves. In addition to fast starts, Thomas Tuchel’s men also boast furious finishes, having found the net inside the last 15 minutes of play in six road trips so far this campaign. The one potential problem for PSG could be that they’ve failed to keep a clean sheet in five of their previous six league trips, allowing over 1.5 goals in that period only once though. But, the reigning L1 holders shut out Lille in four consecutive competitive trips to the Stade Pierre-Mauroy before suffering a humiliating 5-1 defeat last season.
