Juventus vs Bayern Leverkusen 02/10/19
2 October 2019
After a 2-2 away draw with Atletico Madrid last time out, Juventus will look to post their first victory of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League (CL) campaign when they take on Bayern Leverkusen at the Allianz Stadium this midweek.
None of Juventus’ CL home fixtures last season ended in a draw (W3, L2), with all of those triumphs seeing them beat their rivals to nil. Interestingly though, both of their home defeats to Manchester United and Ajax have ended with the identical 2-1 scoreline, as it was the first time in history that the Bianconeri lost more than one home game in a single European campaign. Ever since moving to the Allianz Stadium, the reigning Serie A holders have made it their fortress, allowing just four defeats in 38 European matches at this venue (W22, D12, L4). Frustratingly for Maurizio Sarri, three of those defeats have come in the last six games, and all have seen them concede two or more goals and score one or less. Another disappointing fact for the home fans is that Juventus have managed to beat the Bundesliga visitors only once in the last five matches here (W1, D2, L2).
On the other hand, the visitors’ struggling in Europe’s top tier continued with a 2-1 home loss to Lokomotiv Moscow on matchday one, which was their fourth defeat in their last 14 CL outings (W2, D8, L4). Having returned to Europe’s most prestigious club competition after a two-year absence, Die Werkself will look to extend their unbeaten CL away streak to six games (W1, D4) and bring their five-game winless run in Italy to a halt at the same time (D1, L4). In his effort to lead Bayer to their first European win in Italy since 1999/2000, Peter Bosz can count on Leverkusen’s solid away form in Europe lately (W4, D5, L2) and the fact his players have netted ten away goals in the UEFA Europa League group stage last term.
