Hertha BSC vs Union Berlin 23/05/20

23 May 2020

Hertha TSC welcome Union Berlin to the Olympiastadion for a mid-table Bundesliga (BL) clash, with just a single point separating the sides ahead of the kick-off.

A commanding 3-0 away triumphs over TSG Hoffenheim in the first league fixture since the coronavirus pandemic has brought Hertha’s two-game winless BL run to a halt (D2). The hosts will need to replicate similar performances here to secure their elusive first home victory since the turn of the year (D2, L3), especially considering they drew a blank in three of those matches. But, it may be a daunting prospect for ‘Die Alte Diva’ to pick up a win here as they’ve failed to beat Union Berlin in both of their previous competitive H2Hs held at this venue (D1, L1).

Meanwhile, the visitors have suffered a 2-0 home defeat to Bayern Munich in the build-up to this encounter, stretching their winless BL run to three straight games (D1, L2). Curiously, none of Union’s last six league away matches has ended in a draw (W2, L4), with four of those results (win/loss) yielding a multiple-goal margin. Another potential worry for the traveling side could be the fact that they’ve shipped over 1.5 goals in eight of 13 league road trips thus far, with 64% (16) of their 25 away goals conceded arriving in the second half of play. Urs Fischer’s men have also failed to impress offensively, scoring an average of 1.07 goals per BL away fixture.
