Girona vs Cadiz
Estadio Montilivi is the venue as La Liga top-four hopefuls Girona and relegation-battling Cadiz face off against each other.
Girona’s faint hopes of lifting the title against the odds vanished after a five-game losing run on the road as they commence this round in third, only four points clear of fourth-placed Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone’s side thumped the Catalan outfit 3-1 last weekend, even though Girona grabbed an early lead, extending their patch form to seven matches alternating between winning and losing (W3, L4). But since each of those three victories came on home turf and saw Michel’s side score 2+ goals, the hosts will be confident of pulling off their first-ever La Liga double over Cadiz following a narrow 1-0 win in the reverse fixture. Adding to Michel’s optimism, his men are unbeaten in their last 12 competitive games at home (W10, D2).
On the other hand, Girona’s travel sickness pales to insignificance compared to Cadiz’s long-standing struggles on the road, highlighted by a disastrous 20-game winless La Liga run away from home. As the only side alongside Granada yet to win a top-flight match on hostile turf this season (D6, L9), the visitors face a formidable task of defying their disappointing away record against Girona (W1, D1, L4). Any win would likely require a clean sheet, with Cadiz remaining the only team in La Liga yet to hit double digits in terms of away goals in 2023/24 (7). Indeed, they have failed to get on the scoresheet on five of their six league travels in 2024, with a 1-1 draw at Rayo Vallecano in early March the only exception to this disastrous streak.
