Feyenoord vs Southampton 28/07/19

28 July 2019

Eager to bounce back after a disastrous 2018-19 Premier League campaign, Southampton will try to maintain an encouraging pre-season form when they take on Feyenoord at De Kuip this weekend.

Although the Dutch giants started their pre-season off on the right foot, securing three straight wins, they dipped in from in the last three outings (D1, L2). Nonetheless, all six of those matches have produced over 2.5 goals, while four of them saw both teams score. Feyenoord’s main problem ahead of this clash could be their inability to keep a clean sheet that has seen them concede at least one goal in eight of their last ten games. Still, De club aan de Maas have netted 2+ match goals on seven occasions across the same period, scoring a total of 23 goals in those ten matches.

Meanwhile, the Saints have so far enjoyed a successful pre-season, having clinched two wins in three friendlies this summer (W2, D1). Importantly for Ralph Hasenhüttl, his players have netted over 2.5 match goals in both of their wins against Preston and Guangzhou R&F. Southampton’s massive problems in the final third have seen them score just 45 goals in the Premier League last term, which was the sixth joint-worst record in the English top tier. Another potential worry for Hasenhüttl is that Southampton failed to keep a blank slate in nine of their previous ten outings, allowing two or more goals per match four times though.
