Eintracht Frankfurt vs Augsburg

The two sides desperate to bounce back from a disastrous start to the new Bundesliga season will lock horns at Deutsche Bank Park as Eintracht Frankfurt take on Augsburg.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s first opening-day defeat since 2015/16 saw them succumb to an embarrassing 5-2 loss at Borussia Dortmund as they hope for a quick turnaround here. After going the entire 2020/21 Bundesliga season unbeaten at home (W10, D7) – for the first time since 1973/74 – the hosts must be confident of returning to winning ways here, especially with fans back in attendance. Despite their imperious home form last season, Eintracht’s sluggish starts at Deutsche Bank Park saw them concede the opening goal on more occasions (11) than any other top-11 team, with a league-high 15 of their home top-flight matches in 2020/21 seeing both sides on the scoresheet. That might not be the case here, though, with ‘Die Adler’ winning the last two Bundesliga H2Hs as hosts by an aggregate scoreline of 7-0.

In the meantime, Augsburg go into this encounter on the back of a horrendous 4-0 home defeat to TSG Hoffenheim on Matchday 1, meaning each of their last three Bundesliga fixtures saw over 3.5 goals and both teams scoring. Widely regarded as one of the likeliest relegation candidates, the visitors succumbed to six consecutive away Bundesliga losses down the final stretch of last season, frustratingly netting under 1.5 goals on five occasions. Another low-scoring matchday could be on the cards, considering they have lost each of their last three top-flight H2Hs by over 1.5 goals ‘to nil.’ Potentially the only good omen ahead of the kick-off could be Augsburg’s six-game unbeaten run on Matchday 2 in the Bundesliga (W2, D4).
