Ecuador vs Uruguay 14/10/20

14 October 2020

Uruguay head to the Estadio de Liga Deportiva Universitaria to take on Ecuador in the World Cup qualifier, looking to bring a two-game winless run in this country to a halt (D1, L1).

A 1-0 away loss to Argentina in their opening World Cup qualifier now means none of Ecuador’s last six matches has ended level (W3, L3). Curiously, five of those results (wins/losses) have seen the winning side shut out the loser, with half (three) of them producing the same 1-0 scoreline. Perhaps surprisingly, ‘La Tricolor’ enter this encounter as a betting favorite, which comes as a boost knowing they’ve avoided defeat in their last seven such contests (W3, D4). However, a record of one draw and ten losses from their previous 11 clashes against top-ten ranked CONMEBOL could be an issue, especially considering they were trailing at half-time in eight of those ten failures (HT: D2, L8).

As for Uruguay, they’ve got off to a flying start to their World Cup qualification campaign, beating Chile 2-1 at home to bring their unbeaten run to 14 games (W9, D5). Remarkably, 66.67% of their wins during that 14-game sequence were ‘to nil,’ with four yielding a full-time margin of over 2.5 goals. Additionally, quick out of the blocks, Oscar Tabarez’s men have conceded the opening goal in just two of those 14 matches, both of which ended in a draw. However, going back to March 2016, ‘La Celeste’ have pulled off just a single win from seven World Cup qualifiers held away from home (W1, D3, L3), conceding 2+ goals on four of those occasions.
