Borussia Monchengladbach vs Schalke 04 18/08/19

18 August 2019

Borussia Monchengladbach come face-to-face with Schalke 04 at the Borussia-Park for their 2019-20 Bundesliga opener.

The hosts narrowly went past Sandhausen in the first round of DFB Pokal last time out, as they now look to post their third consecutive win over Schalke in H2Hs. The Foals have collapsed in the final stage of last season, securing just one triumph in the last five games of the 2018-19 campaign (W1, D1, L3), which ultimately cost them the Champions League promotion. What’s more, the Prussians have struggled to pick up a win in all eight of their previous BL home outings (D3, L5), conceding over 1.5 match goals in all five of those defeats while failing to find the net in three. An encouraging fact for Marco Rose is, however, that Monchengladbach won five of their last seven home H2H meetings with Schalke across all competitions (W5, D2). Notably, all of those clashes have seen both teams score with six of them producing over 2.5 goals.

On the other hand, the visitors go into this fixture of the back of a routine 5-0 away win over the lower-league side Drochtersen/Asser, extending their unbeaten run across all competitions to five games (W2, D3). Still, the Miners have experienced utterly disappointing 2018-19 BL campaign, finishing just five points clear of the relegation zone. Interestingly though, 18 of their total 33 league points last season have come away from home (54.54%), and the Royal Blues have dodged failure on their last four BL road trips (W2, D2). Another interesting fact is that five of six Schalke’s away draws last term have seen both teams score, with four of them ending with the same 1-1 scoreline.
