Borussia Dortmund vs Mainz 05 14/04/19

14 April 2019

Borussia Dortmund and Mainz 05 go head-to-head at the Signal Iduna Park in a clash that looks set for goals not one of eight of their previous Bundesliga H2Hs held at this venue ended goalless.

Interestingly, four of their last five H2Hs here have produced over 2.5 goals, with both teams finding the back of the net on all four occasions.

The hosts go into this fixture off the back of a 5-0 hammering to Bayern Munich on the road, as they desperately need a win here to preserve their chances of lifting the Bundesliga title. Notably though, Die Borussen remain the only German team that has yet to suffer home failure in the BL this campaign (W12, D2) having notched more goals at home than any other team in the German top flight (45). What’s more, Die Schwarzgelben are the only BL team to score 2+ match goals in all 14 of their league home outings this term, with Lucien Favre’s players bagging 3+ match goals in four of their last five BL fixtures at the Signal Iduna Park. However, the current runners-up have been struggling for clean sheets this season, conceding at least one goal in 11of 14 league games at this venue so far.

Meanwhile, a stunning 5-0 home win over Freiburg last time out has helped the visitors to halt a four-game BL losing streak. It was also only the second time since the turn of the year that they’ve managed to keep a clean sheet. Mainz’s defensive frailties have seen them conceding over 1.5 goals per match in 7 of 11 BL outings in 2019, allowing 2+ match goals on all of their six BL road trips after the Christmas break. Another potential worry for Sandro Schwarz could be Die Nullfünfer’s lack of composure in the final third that has seen them failing to score in three of their last five BL away games while scoring precisely one goal in the remaining two.
