Borussia Dortmund vs Austria Wien
16 August 2020
Austria Wien and Borussia Dortmund will lock horns in a friendly match at the CASHPOINT Arena this weekend. The Bundesliga giants have won all three of their H2H clashes in the 21st century – each via a single-goal margin, with the last two producing the identical 1-0 scoreline.
Austria Wien go into their preparations for the new season on the back of two matches without a win (D1, L1). Curiously, all five of their previous fixtures have ended separating the sides by under 1.5 goals at full-time (W3, D1, L1), with three of them featuring under 1.5 goals. Yet, ‘Die Veilchen’ have been impressive since the resumption of football in June, picking up eight wins from 13 games (D2, L3). Peter Stöger has based his team’s success on an air-tight defense that kept a clean sheet in six of those 13 contests, restricting their opposition to precisely one goal per game in four of the other seven.
Meanwhile, Dortmund hammered Austria’s fellow Austrian Bundesliga rivals Altach 6-0 in their first off-season fixture, which now means 12 of their last 14 matches have seen the winner on the day keep a blank sheet (W10, L4). In fact, all four of Borussia’s previous games have witnessed the triumphant side win both halves ‘to nil.’ But, before dismantling Altach, ‘Die Borussen’ have largely failed to impress in the attacking third, scoring under 1.5 goals in five of seven matches prior. Still, away from home, Lucien Favre’s men have racked up five consecutive victories, all of which saw them keep a clean sheet in the first half, with five producing a full-time margin of at least two goals.
