Bordeaux vs Olympique Marseille 02/02/20

2 February 2020

Bordeaux and Olympique Marseille go head-to-head in a massive Ligue (L1) showdown at the Matmut Atlantique that could serve up another low-scoring affair.

Bordeaux managed to put a dismal four-game losing L1 run behind them thanks to a narrow 1-0 away triumph over Nantes last time out, but a lack of goals continues to trouble the home fans. Indeed, Les Girondins have now scored one goal or less in six of their previous seven league fixtures, drawing a blank in the second half on all but one of those occasions too. Therefore, Paulo Sosa will again rely on his rock-solid backline to deliver him a positive outcome, as Bordeaux shut out their opponents in four of their last seven competitive home games. Given the fact that they’ve restricted Marseille to a maximum of one goal per match in all 11 of their previous top-flight H2Hs held here, Bordeaux are unlikely to concede more than once now either.

Meanwhile, coming into this encounter on the back of a comfortable 3-1 triumph over Strasbourg in Coupe de France, the visitors will be looking to post their elusive first L1 victory at this venue in the 21st century (D10, L8). Les Phocéens’s bid to beat Bordeaux here can also be strengthened by the fact that they’ve racked up a ten-game undefeated league run (W8, D2). Impressively, all of those matches during that unbeaten streak have seen Marseille concede one goal or less, with seven witnessing them score two or more. Andre Villas-Boas will hope his side can improve their goalscoring ratio of just 1.3 goals per L1 away fixture, even though his men have bagged under 1.5 goals in five of their last seven league road trips.
