Bayern Munich vs Mainz 05 31/08/19

31 August 2019

Bayern Munich will look to post their first home win in the 2019/20 Bundesliga (BL) season when they meet Mainz 05 at the Allianz Arena this weekend.

After a disappointing 2-2 home draw with Hertha Berlin, the reigning BL holders have swept Schalke 04 away with a 3-0 road win last time out. The Bavarians will now look to stretch their winning BL run against Mainz to five games, with three of their previous four H2H triumphs seeing them score 2+ match goals and concede none. The aforementioned draw with Hertha has brought Bayern’s perfect home record of nine BL home wins in 2019 to a halt, and it was also the first time since a 3-3 draw with Fortuna Dusseldorf in November 2018 that Niko Kovac’s players allowed over 1.5 match goals at the Allianz Arena. Bayern’s dominance over Mainz at this venue has seen them score a total of 12 goals in their last three BL H2Hs here (W2, D1).

Meanwhile, the visitors will be desperate to step up their game following back-to-back losses at the beginning of the new BL season. Frustratingly for Sandro Schwarz, both of Mainz’s league defeats this term have seen his players concede precisely three goals per match and score one or less. That’s in sharp contrast, however, to their form in the final stage of last season, where they picked up two wins in the last three games of the 2018/19 BL campaign (W2, D1). But, Mainz’s disastrous away form in 2019 gives them virtually no hope ahead of this trip, as Die Nullfünfer suffered eight losses in ten BL away games since the turn of the year (W2, L8). Seven of those defeats have been accompanied by at least two goals in their net while five saw them fail to score.
