Bayern Munich vs Borussia Mönchengladbach
Bayern Munich vs. Borussia Mönchengladbach
Arguably the most highly anticipated fixture of the Bundesliga (BL) Matchday 31 will take place at the Allianz Arena this weekend, as Bayern Munich lock horns with Borussia Mönchengladbach.
The hosts are enjoying the purple patch of form, as they come into this meeting on a run of 21 consecutive matches in all competitions without a loss (W20, D1). By extension, they’ve won all nine of their previous league fixtures, with seven of them producing at least a two-goal margin. In turn, the perennial German champions tend to win with dignity when they do so, especially on home soil. In fact, nine of their 11 top-flight home triumphs this season have produced multiple-goal margins, with six of them yielding a clean sheet, too. But, the Bavarian giants have struggled to impose their dominance against Mönchengladbach at home lately, picking up just two triumphs from their last five league H2Hs held at this venue (D1, L2).
In the meantime, the visitors are still looking to find their footing in the post-pandemic period, having secured only two wins in five top-flight fixtures since football returned to action in May (D1, L2). ‘Die Fohlen’ have no margin for error here, as they sit fourth, but level on points with fifth-placed Bayer Leverkusen. That’s easier said than done, especially considering their indifferent away form in 2020 (W3, D2, L2). The outcome of this massive showdown will depend on whether or not Marco Rose’s men can find the opening goal. Indeed, Mönchengladbach lost all but one of their six BL away games in which they’ve shipped the opener this term (W1). On the other hand, they clinched six wins from seven BL trips in which they’ve opened the scoring (D1).
