Augsburg vs Borussia Dortmund 02/03/19

2 March 2019

The Bundesliga relegation fighters and the title contenders go head-to-head at the WWK Arena as Augsburg take on Borussia Dortmund.

Augsburg’s top-flight survival is at risk considering they sit just two points above 16th-placed Stuttgart, and there’s a reasonable concern they could be ending up in the relegation territory after this fixture. The hosts don’t have many reasons for excitement as they’ve entered this round carrying a three-game BL losing streak on their backs. Not only they’ve lost three times in a row, but they’ve also conceded over 2.5 goals per match in each meeting while scoring just three goals in the process. Moreover, Augsburg’s tally of two wins after 11 BL home clashes is the BL’s joint-worst, with Manuel Baum’s men losing four of their last six home games in the Germain top tier (W1, D1, L4). However, entertainment has not been in short supply when the Fuggerstädter played at the WWK Arena recently, as seven of their previous eight home contests across all competitions produced over 2.5 goals.

The league leaders can’t sleep tight knowing Bayern Munich sit just three points adrift of them, which is why they must win here. Although the visitors come into this meeting off the back of a precious 3-2 home win over Bayer Leverkusen, they’ve been struggling a lot over the past few weeks. Before the aforementioned triumph, the Black and Yellows have failed to pick up a victory in five consecutive outings across all competitions (D3, L2), registering three successive BL stalemates. Lucien Favre’s main problem still concerns his team’s defensive displays that have seen them concede a goal in six of their last seven competitive games, allowing a total of 13 goals in the process. A growing issue for Favre could be the fact his players have failed to find the net on two straight road trips while scoring exactly one goal per match three times before that.
