Arsenal vs Newcastle United 02/04/19

2 April 2019

Arsenal and Newcastle United go head-to-head at the Emirates Stadium as the hosts look to maintain a strong run of form and keep up the pace in the Champions League promotion race.

Unbeaten in their previous five Premier League outings (W4, D1), the Gunners continue their pursuit of the Champions League return as they currently sit just one point adrift of fourth-placed Manchester United. What’s more, Unai Emery’s men have racked up a stunning nine-game PL home winning run in the build-up to this meeting, scoring 2+ match goals eight times across those games. Emery can also be happy with the way his players have protected their goal in the recent period considering they’ve allowed just one goal in five of their last home clashes across all competitions. On top of that, Arsenal have outplayed Newcastle in six of their previous H2H encounters at this venue, preventing the Magpies from scoring on three occasions in the process.

Meanwhile, the visitors seem to be on their way of preserving the top-flight status in spite of a dreadful start of the league campaign. With 11 points gathered in their last six PL outings (W3, D2, L1), the Magpies have escaped the relegation territory, as they currently sit seven points clear of 18th-placed Cardiff City. Interestingly, Rafa Benitez seems to have found an answer for Newcastle’s immense problems in the final third, with the Tynesiders scoring over 1.5 goals per match in four of their previous five league clashes. But, Newcastle are far more comfortable at home, with just two of their nine PL wins this term coming on the road. Moreover, Benitez’s men have failed to wrap up all three points on all seven of their previous PL road trips (D3, L4), scoring one goal or less six times during the run.
