Argentina vs Chile 06/07/19

6 July 2019

Argentina and Chile will go head-to-head at the Arena Corinthians in the closing stage of the 2019 Copa America, but unlike the last two editions, when the two nations fought for the title, they will now battle it out for the third place.

Argentina’s hopes of lifting their first Copa America trophy in the 21st century have come a cropper in the semi-finals as they’ve sustained a 2-0 loss to arch-rivals Brazil. Interestingly, four of Argentina’s five games at the competition have ended with the same 2-0 scoreline (W2, L2), with three of those matches witnessing goals in both halves. Toothless in the final third but stubborn at the back, the Argentineans have struggled to provide their fans with entertainment in 2019, as six of their eight outings since the turn of the year have featured under 2.5 goals. La Albiceleste will now be eager to settle the score with Chile, who have come off better in both of their previous H2H meetings at Copa America, beating Argentina after a penalty shootout in the last two finals.

Meanwhile, the back-to-back champions have suffered a disastrous 3-0 defeat to Peru in the semi-finals in a game that has seen the Peruvians score from three goals from as many shots on target. It was Chile’s second loss at the competition following a 1-0 failure against Uruguay in the group stage, and it was also the third consecutive match in which they’ve failed to find the net. But, if La Roja win here, it would probably see them score at least two goals as all three of their triumphs in 2019 saw Reinaldo Rueda’s men netting over 1.5 goals per match. But, except for two wins over Argentina at Copa America, Chile have suffered four defeats in their last six H2Hs with Le Albiceleste, with three of those encounters being settled by a narrow one-goal margin.
