Ajax vs PSV Eindhoven 28/07/19

28 July 2019

Ajax and PSV Eindhoven will battle it out in the Dutch Super Cup that will take place at the Johan Cruijff Arena this weekend. None of the last five H2H meetings between these two sides has ended in a stalemate, with PSV coming off better on three occasions.

Even though they go into this clash off the back of a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Panathinaikos, the Lancers have been impressive in their pre-season so far, registering four wins in five games prior (W4, D1). Notably, all nine of Ajax’s previous matches have seen both teams score, with eight of them producing over 2.5 goals. Ajax’s free-scoring form has now seen them score in 19 straight matches since late March, with Erik ten Hag’s men bagging 2+ match goals 14 times in the process. Also, all ten of Ajax’s last games have featured goals in both halves, with the Jews finding the net before the halftime whistle on eight occasions along the way.

On the other hand, the Farmers come into this meeting full of confidence following a 3-2 home win over Basel in the first leg of their Champions League Qualifiers tie. Before that, the Lightbulbs have endured mixed fortunes in four summer friendlies (W1, D1, L2), with both of those failures seeing them concede two or more goals. Mark van Bommel’s main worry ahead of this fixture is PSV’s inability to keep a clean sheet, as they conceded at least one goal in eight of their last 11 outings. Interestingly, PSV have scored 2+ match goals in four of their previous seven matches, while failing to find the net in the remaining three.
