AC Milan vs Inter Milan 18/03/19
18 March 2019
Rocked by a disappointing Europa League elimination to Eintracht Frankfurt, Inter Milan enter Derby della Madonnina looking to stretch a four-game unbeaten run against AC Milan at the Stadio San Siro (W2, D2).
The ‘hosts’ enjoy a purple patch in 2019 having won six of eight Serie A outings (W6, D2), which has seen them leapfrog arch-rivals Inter. Sitting third in the table, the Rossoneri go into this meeting off the back of a promising five-game SA winning run, during which they’ve scored 12 goals while allowing just two in the process. What’s more, no Italian team has conceded fewer goals in the league than AC Milan (3) in 2019, with Gennaro Gattuso’s men keeping five clean sheets in eight SA clashes after the Christmas break. Encouraged by a strong run of form, the 7-time Champions League winners chase their first Serie A triumph over bitter rivals since 2016.
The ‘visitors’ halted a mini-slump of two straight failures (D1, L1) with a 2-0 home win over SPAL. However, sitting three points clear of fifth-placed AS Roma, the Nerazzurri are frantically looking over their shoulders worried about their Champions League promotion. Far more comfortable at home, 71.43% of their total SA losses have arrived away from home although that won’t matter much here. Interestingly, all three of Inter’s previous road triumphs across all competitions have ended with the same 1-0 scoreline in their favor, while the Nerazzurri last picked up all three points without a clean sheet in October 2018. The absence of real idea in attack and a stubborn defending have resulted in three of Inter’s previous fixtures producing under 2.5 goals.
